Clinical Parenting Consultation and Therapeutic Services

Family Matters mission is to assist parents, children, and other relatives in reaching a sense of permanency whether through the reunification process, termination of parental rights and adoption, and divorce. The clinical staff at Family Matters are Master Level or higher in the areas of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, and Clinical Psychology. Many staff members hold current Connecticut licensure in their respective fields. The staff has a menu of specialized training including but not limited to parenting skills, foster care issues, sexual abuse and trauma, therapeutic crisis intervention, in-home and outpatient psychotherapy, family reunification, inpatient psychiatric services, child development, and intergenerational family patterns, as direct service clinicians to the management/supervisory level. Clinical staff is often matched with the referrals according the needs of the family and their area of expertise.

The clinical parenting consultation and visitation service provides a comprehensive treatment program including therapeutic supervised visitation, parenting consultation and education, individual therapy through an identified processing time. Clinical assessment and interactional dynamics are constantly assessed and documented in a formal clinical report documenting the observations of the visit as well as clinical recommendations and impressions. Parenting skills are trained and processed with each parent as they develop appropriate interactions with their children. This supports the child’s overall development of healthy self-esteem, confidence, and security. Clinicians intervene in behaviors that can have a detrimental effect on the healthy emotional development of a child. These behaviors include control, covert manipulation, or threats that may re-victimize the child, particularly in situations where there has been physical and/or emotional abuse. Clinical Parenting Consultations provide an important component in determining the feasibility of reunification as the clinician interacts with both parent(s) and child(ren). Therapeutic services are provided for final visits between children and biological parents.

The identified processing time at the end of each visit with the parents provides not only feedback about the visit but education, and at times are brief therapy sessions. The processing time includes goal identification in the development of parenting skills and to review the behaviors and interactions that occur during each visit. The impact of the process on the child(ren) is also highlighted to increase parent’s awareness and focus on the child(ren). This information is provided in comprehensive clinical reports which provide additional clinical information for the Department of Children and Families as well as others who provide the family with therapeutic, protective, or legal services. Clinical staff at Family Matters observes firsthand the interactions, family dynamics, and clinical needs that are often beneficial in court proceedings. The staff has and is experienced in testifying for all legal proceedings.
